Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist.

Development of Osteoporosis

Development of osteoporosis is a result of 2 factors.

Your Peak Bone Mass - The highest level of bone mineral density achieved at skeletal maturity.

Your Rate of Bone Loss - Bone loss begins around the age of 30.


Bone Cycle

Age 0 - 30
Bone remodeling works in your favor.
You add more bone than you lose.

Age 30
Reach Peak Bone Mass.

30 - Menopause
Start to lose bone 0.5 - 1 % a year
1st five years after menopause
2-5% of bone loss per year. Up to 20% in five years.

Age 55 - 70
Bone loss slows down to 1% per year

Age 70 and over
0.5% per year

(It is recommended that for woman over 30 to be tested every two years and women who are past menopause to be tested every year.)

Exercise for Healthy Bone

Bone is living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger.
Just as a muscle gets stronger and bigger the more you use it, a bone becomes stronger and denser when you place demands on it.


Two types of exercises are important for building and maintaining bone mass and density.


Weight bearing exercise
Resistance strengthening exercise

How Much Calcium Should You Take?

Adolescents 1200-1500mg
Adults 1000mg
Pregnant or nursing 1200-1500mg
Adults over 65 1500mg

Women After Menopause
Not taking hormone replacement 1500mg
Taking hormone replacement 1000mg

Bone Health

Some research indicates that bone health depends not just on calcium, but on a wide range of other nutrients, including vitamins B6, C, D, K, folic acid, and trace elements such as magnesium, boron, zinc, copper, strontium, and silicon.

The typical Western diet, with its high content of sugar and refined foods, appears to be deficient in many of these vitamin and minerals.
